Frequently Asked Gutter Cleaning Questions
Installing guttering is just one of the many thing you do to protect your biggest monetary investment, your home. However gutters are not something that can be installed and forgotten about. They must be maintained in order to protect your home as they are designed to do. Maintenance involves routine cleaning ,which ideally should take place twice a year or more often under certain circumstances.
Do My Gutters Need Cleaning?
A few good signs that indicate gutters are clogged and need to be cleaned are rain water coming over the gutter top, water in the basement, water constantly dripping from the gutters when it is not raining or hasn’t rained recently or water leaking inside your home where the ceilings and walls meet.
How Do Gutters Become Clogged?
Gutters become clogged from leaves which fall in autumn and during the late spring/early summer when the various seed pods and blossoms fall from trees. These falling items land on the roof, wash down in the gutter system and clog up the gutters and down spouts. Sometimes small animals, such as birds and squirrels, may build a nest inside or behind your gutters which can also cause a clog. Stinging insects, such as hornets and wasps, may also choose the eaves or gutters of your home to build their nests and clog up the gutters.
What Happens When Gutters are Clogged?
Rain water overflows over the front or back of the gutter when the system is clogged. The water overflow runs down the side of the house, staining and damaging the siding. The soil around the house foundation will also erode and create an easy access point for rain and flood water to enter the home. If rain water overflows the back of the gutter, it can leak inside your home and set the stage for mold and mildew to grow. The constant overflow of rainwater against the home’s wood rafters will eventually cause them to rot also.
How Are Gutters Cleaned?
We clean all gutters by hand. If a water hose and spigot are available, we can flush your gutters and make sure that any loose debris is washed down through your downspout, and make sure there are not clogs in your downspout. All debris is placed in trash bags and properly disposed of.
